Everyone who wishes to attend Ulpan Gordon is required to take a placement exam. The placement exam is given irregardless of your level of Hebrew knowledge. This may seem unnecessary for a person who arrives with zero knowledge of Hebrew but it’s also an opportunity to speak with a (very helpful!) staff member one-on-one to discuss class availability and to discuss which class will work better for you.
The exam schedule is as follows:
- Placement Exam every Sunday at 5:00 pm (1700)
or
- Placement Exam every Thursday at 9:00 am (0900)
There are two exam times depending on if you prefer to come in during the morning or evening. You are only required to attend one.
What to expect
- You should report directly to the main office on the lower level where a staff member will inform you which classroom to report to (remember, classroom 1 is on the 1st floor for North American custom. Room 11 is on the 2nd floor. Room 21 is on the 3rd floor. Room 31 is on the 4th floor, etc.)
- You only need to bring a pen/pencil and your local phone number if you have one.
- The other students taking the exam with you will be from many different levels of Hebrew. Don’t feel intimidated that there are students more advanced than you. They will be assigned to different classes.
- The instructor will explain the directions in both Hebrew and English.
- They will give you two options for the written exam; basic Hebrew knowledge (level Aleph or less), or, advanced. Both exams are completely in Hebrew.
- The basic Hebrew exam will be fill-in-the-blank, multiple choice, reading a dialogue and answering questions about it, and a final short paragraph essay.
- You are not expected to complete the exam but you are encouraged to finish as much as possible.
- Once you’re finished with the written exam, the instructor will grade your exam. She will ask you some questions in Hebrew to test your conversational skills. Do not feel bad if you can not speak any Hebrew with her. Tell her immediately and she will go directly to scheduling you for a class.
- If you have some Hebrew knowledge already, she will give you a piece of paper to sit in a class for one day. This allows you to feel if the level of the class is appropriate for you. If the level is good, you should go to the office to pay for the course. If it is not good, then they will assign a different class for you to try.
