Mikhail is studying Hebrew at Kibbutz Ein-Hashofet and I thought it would be a great opportunity to ask him a few questions about studying Hebrew there!
1) How long have you been studying Hebrew and what was your biggest motivation to learn?
I’ve been studying Hebrew since October 27th. The first day of the ulpan. I forget it all since my Bar Mitzvah.
2) What’s your schedule like at the Kibbutz Ein HaShofet ulpan?
I work 3 days a week, sun/tues/thurs from 6am till 230(or 3 sometimes)pm. Everyone in Kita Aleph works on these days, kita bet works mon/wed. We’ll switch in a few weeks(through half of the ulpan)
3) Are there any advantages or disadvantages (or both!) to studying at an ulpan in a kibbutz?
Some advantages are that you learn Hebrew for 7-8 hours a day and you have to learn hebrew to communicate with the kibbutznik’s. Disadvantages are that everyone starts their day off at an unG-dly early hour, which makes studying after class/work a little more difficult. And also, we don’t see a lot of Israeli culture since we are in the middle of nowhere.
4) What kind of work are you required to do at the kibbutz?
Everyone works… some jobs include laundry(my job), factories, cleaning up the ulpan area, etc. The basic kibbutz jobs.
5) Walk us through an average class session for you.
Class starts at 8am. Breakfast is from 9-930. Then class till 11, and break till 1120. Lunch is from 1250-1340. Lunch is the best meal of the day. Made fresh. Dinner on the other hand is up to 20 days old. After lunch we have class until 330. The later it is, the faster we go and sometimes its hard to keep up especially if you don’t drink massive amounts of coffee to stay awake. heh
Learn letters before you get to class so you can read normally. I had some catching up to do b/c I didn’t know them from the start, and the teacher assumed everyone did.
7) And finally, what’s your favorite Hebrew word?
I don’t have Hebrew on my computer(yet), so I’ll write it in English letters.. and it’s ‘pil’. Elephants are awesome. haha
Thank you Mikhail for some wonderful and informative answers!
